A total of 64 people have lost their lives after a fuel tanker exploded near Dar es Salaam on the weekend.
On Saturday, a fuel tanker crashed in the town of Morogoro. While looters rushed to the scene to syphon off petrol from the tanker, it exploded, leaving 64 dead and 70 injured.
This is not the first case of a stricken tanker attracting thieves then catching on fire in central Africa. Last month in Nigeria, a similar incident lead to 45 deaths and 100 injured.
"There are vehicles that carry dangerous fuel oil, as in this case in Morogoro, there are others that carry toxic chemicals or explosives, let's stop this practice, please," pleaded Tanzania President John.
Magufuli added that the funeral for the dead will begin on Sunday afternoon and that Monday has been declared a day of mourning.
