Over R100 000 has been raised towards embattled Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s legal woes.
After the Constitutional Court agreed with an earlier ruling that Mkhwebane did not do an honourable investigation in the ABSA-Bankorp matter, she was ordered to foot the R900 000 legal bill.
However, civic organisation Democracy in Action has headed up a funding campaign. Chairperson Thabo Mtsweni revealed that as of Saturday, R107 00 had been raised for Mkhwebane.
"By yesterday when we checked we had raised about R107 000," he told IOL.
"We are happy with the way the donations are coming so far when you consider that in three weeks we have managed to raise over R100 000. We are hopefully that we will reach the R900 000 target within three months."
However, the ABSA-Bankorp loss is just one of Mkhwebane’s setbacks, as she has lost several key legal battles and many are calling for her resignation.
