The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal has confirmed the axing of embattled mayor Zandile Gumede.
The provincial executive committee (PEC) has axed Gumede along with Msunduzi mayor Themba and other senior officials
Gumede's axing follows her arrest her in May on fraud and corruption charges related to a R208 million waste collection tender in 2016. He has been on extended special leave since.
"All ANC members who are serving as Exco members in eThekweni and uMsunduzi local municipalities, respectively, should with immediate effect be redeployed," said ANC provincial secretary, Mdumiseni Ntuli.
"All PEC mandated the provincial working committee, working through the officials, to ensure that all vacancies occasioned by this decisions are filled and filled within seven days from today."
News of Gumede's removal was announced at a press briefing in Durban.
