Australia have suffered a major blow with the news that Steve Smith has been ruled out of the third Ashes Test, starting on Thursday.
Smith has not recovered sufficiently from the blow he took to his head from a Jofra Archer delivery in the second Test at Lord's, which ended in a draw.
The batsman left the field after being hit by Archer but returned to the crease 45 minutes later.
The next day Smith was ruled out of the Lord's Test with concussion and Marnus Labuschagne became the first ever replacement in Test cricket, according to the new rules.
The 30-year-old Smith, who has scored two centuries and 92 so far in the two Tests, was on Tuesday ruled out of the match that will take place at Headingley.
Cricket Australia announced on their website: "Steve Smith has been ruled out of the third Ashes Test at Headingley, with coach Justin Langer confirming the news after the batsman sat out Australia's training session on Tuesday."
