Hurricane Dorian is growing in strength as it heads towards the mainland of the United States.
The BBC reported that the eye of the hurricane missed the US territory of Puerto Rico on Thursday, though it was still battered by winds and heavy rain. An 80-year-old man died when he fell off his ladder while trying to prepare his home for the deluge. Another 23 000 were left without power due to damaged cables on the island.
At the moment, the storm has winds of over 140kph. However, Dorian is growing in size and strength as it travels across the Atlantic waters.
"On this track, Dorian should move over the Atlantic well east of the southeastern and central Bahamas today and on Friday and approach the northwestern Bahamas on Saturday," said forecasters.
Dorian in the main is expected to make landfall anywhere from Florida to South Carolina on Sunday evening or Monday morning.
