Police minister Bheki Cele says that UCT student Uyinene Mrwetyana's alleged killer was allegedly accused of chasing a woman in a hospital to rape her.
Cele said that the woman opened the case against the accused but the case was later dropped.
On Monday, it was reported that Uyinene was raped and murdered at a Post Office in Claremont. The 42-year-old suspect confessed to killing Uyinene inside the Post Office and dumping her body in Khayelitsha.
Cele spoke about the criminal history of the accused, revealing that the "guy has got a record" and said that he had been previously sentenced to eight years in prison.
He then spoke about an incident that occurred at a hospital where it is believed that the accused went to check on his girlfriend but found another victim instead.
"He went to [the] hospital to check his girlfriend, did not find his girlfriend. In the hospital, he chased the lady to rape her."
According to Cele, the accused confessed to putting Uyinene's body in the boot of his car and driving to Khayelitsha.
The accused considered burning her body but said this was "too risky".
Cele said that there should be no bail for Uyinene's alleged killer.
"Looking at the profile, nothing gives him [a chance of getting] bail."
